Tips for Beginners


Here are a few tips to help with yours!

1. Don't let the warm ups intimidate you.

Most Jiu Jitsu warm ups are designed to build muscle memory and can often be very confusing as you're starting out. With time, these movements will become second nature. Don't hesitate to ask your instructor or a colored belt student for help. Every one in the gym remembers their first day and are always willing to help!

2. Focus on the little victories.

Jiu Jitsu is a marathon, not a sprint. The path is long and can often be frustrating. It is not uncommon to feel like you are not improving at the rate you would like. Don't let this get you down! Focus on improving in specific areas rather than mastering the entire art at once. The time will pass and the progress will come.

3. Self Defense comes first.

Jiu Jitsu is filled with endless options of fun and exciting take downs, submissions, flashy moves and countless other advanced moves. These will all become part of your journey, but as you begin, your focus should be on learning the fundamental basics and how to effectively defend yourself in any situation.

4. Respect your gym and partners.

While each person's path is an individual journey, it can't be done alone. Being a good student and good training partner is one of the most important parts of your journey. Be sure to leave the gym in better condition than when you arrived and always follow the golden rule when training with other students.

5. Hygiene is key.

It is of the upmost importance to wash your uniform and gear after each use. It is also important to shower within 2 hours of training. In addition to being courteous to your teammates by avoiding unpleasant odors, there are many health risks associated with failing to practice proper hygiene procedures. Finger and toe nails should be trimmed before class as well.
